STRESS AND SUPPORT VARIABLES PREDICTING TEACHER RETENTION- A STUDY OF PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTIONS
Educational administrators everywhere face problem relating to teacher retention. Although literature exists concerning the factors responsible for teachers’ job dissatisfaction and their quitting the profession, yet there are few studies investigating interrelationships between factors predicting attrition. The purpose of this study is to fill this gap. This study attempts to relate the support and stress variables predicting teacher retention in professional institutions of higher education. Respondents were 255 (male =139; female = 116) randomly chosen from 80 professional institutions in western U.P. in India.
The sample was administered the measures of Teacher effectiveness of student engagement, Social support superiors and colleagues, Role overload, student stressors, job satisfaction and intention to quit. For the purposes of data analysis, Hierarchical multiple- regression was applied. Results indicated that teacher efficacy related to student engagement, role overload stressors and social support superiors predicted significantly the teachers’ intention to leave in the professional institutions of higher education.
